These beauties were sliced and BBQ with a brisket! Last year our California Wonders produced maybe one undersized pepper. It was very disappointing. Their second year is yielding much more. These are the first to be harvested with more on the way! Our second year is turning out to be a great yield of peppers! Yea.

Texas Brown Anole Lizard has been lurking around our pepper garden lately. We wrote about these last year and are really good for your garden. They love to eat insects and are able to help keep the numbers down on the flies.

Our first harvest of the season are the new Cubanelle sweet peppers. It simply didn't take long for these new plants to produce. Our Cubanelle's plants have several more peppers on there way.

The Cubanelle's were a larger plant when we purchased them and are produce fruit just about 5 weeks after planting.
Our Sweet California Wonder peppers are really producing this year at Alejandro Farm! That's exciting. Last year our plants were really stressed out when they arrived and they didn't produce much fruit at all. To say the least we were quite disappointed with their yield. After pruning back these plants they are really showing great promise this year. The size of these standard bell peppers are looking good.

The sweet heat peppers in 2nd year certainly are keeping up with their reputation of bearing fruit first! Even if they look like Bonsai pepper plants. Yep, after pruning just 8 weeks ago the peppers are popping out. Our plants at Alejandro are much smaller due to the pruning but these sweet heat peppers are healthy with strong trunks and mature enough to blossom and produce.

It was unintentional to create small Bonsai peppers plants. In our first year we assumed that these plants would grow out again before baring fruit. We learned that these plants are mature enough to bare fruit even with just a few branches. It will be fun to see how these Sweet heats yield this year.

Phase 2 of Alejandro Farm is now complete with a tomato patch for early 2013. We installed some nice pave stone to help keep area clean and free of weeds and easy to access to plants. We also reconfigured our irrigation system to make room for the expansion of tomato patch and also phase 3. The irrigation now has 3 manual shut-off valves to allow targeted watering throughout seasons. As before, we feature an auto distribution of liquid plant food to our Peppers, Tomato's and Strawberries.

We hope to have a good first season with these strawberries to make homemade preserves. Hm, Hm, Hm. The taste was nice and sweet and provided some insight of what may be coming.

We were able to give away several of our Serrano peppers to some friends in Rockport, TX to make room for Strawberries this year. Yep, we'll be growing Seascape, Ozark Beauties and Quinault's. Looking forward to see which strawberries perform the best.

The Season is yearly but we're getting some nice growth out of our second year pepper plants. We are continuing to water once every other day since the weather is still very cool at night. The pictures following show our pepper plants 4 weeks after pruning back old limbs.

Pruning back each plant can be a little tricky. Watching for new growth around the trunk and near where branches split off is a great place to start.
Almost the end of our pepper season. After picking several nice peppers from the Alejandro Farm today, I can tell this will be almost the end. Yep, there aren't any new blossoms on our plants so it's looking like the end of a great season. Harvesting Mariachi, Serrano, Sweet Heat, Hot Big Guy's, and we finally got some California Wonders. We've sure enjoyed our first season of gardening. The fruits of our Alejandro labors. Making salsa using peppers from our pepper farm! Very satisfying and very good! We chopped up Serrano, Costa Rican, and Hot Big Guy peppers. Our first pepper at Alejandro Farm, Sweet Heat Pepper. Our pepper plants have expoded with growth these last few weeks. Pictured below is the pepper farm right after a thunderstorm. The got beat up a little but will be fine. The umbrellas we added provided a nice protection. We adjusted our automated irrigation down to twice a day.

Bugs have been enjoying the leaves on our pepper plants. As you can see the holes all over the leaves. After doing some research we tried spraying soap water on leaves and found some moderate possitive results. I have also heard from a neighbor that using small amount of garlic juice mixed with water and sprayed on leaves is a good deterant as well.

One of the residents on our Alejandro Pepper farm is the Texas Brown Anole Lizard. These lizards are originally from Cuba and the Bahamas. On our farm he like to eat insects like spiders and cockroaches. This particular anole lost his tale at some point and grew back another one. Loosing their tales is a defensive move so they can get away from preditors like snakes and birds. Most likely our cat or dogs that enjoy chasing them around.

Very exciting stuff as these pepper plants settle in their new home at Alejandro Pepper Farm. We gave them a shot of fertilizer and we can see a noticeable difference in their growth rate. Below is the first evidence of a blossom from the burpee sweet heat pepper plant.
Our irrigation system seems to be working out very well with a occasional blow-out on the tube connections. Hey, we've got 50 psi coming through these lines. Guess I'll have to get the zip ties out. Still watering 4 times a day with 2 minutes per cycle.
Patti & Dave Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14948835002573885520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645255628778809523.post-37004634087829707032012-06-08T17:19:00.000-07:002012-06-08T17:19:10.893-07:00Paper Wasps vs Leafminer FliesOur secret weapon against the leaf minors is the common paper wasp. They have built up a colony under the house easement above Alejandro Pepper Farm. These paper wasps are known to enjoy feeding on caterpillars, flies, and many other pesky insects that feed on our crops.

Though there sting can be strong, these wasps are basically social and only attack when defending themselves and their home. The nest pictured should be about as big as it gets since they're nest typically are up to about 30 wasps. I've destroyed these in the past but now I'm understanding the benefits they have for our garden. They pollinate and feed on nectar and eat flies to feed to their larva.
Patti & Dave Alexanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14948835002573885520noreply@blogger.com1
